An air filter to apply the paint is used (it is recommended) with a 1/2 or 3/8 (inches) inlet and a 1/4 (this is suitable) minimum outlet connection.

Below these sizes, compressed air spraying for paint application (link to parent page) will have sufficient flow for painting a motorcycle or touch-ups, but not enough to paint entire vehicles. Air cleaner filters are essential in bodywork to make sure your spray guns have a good quality air supply.

A good filter always consists of these elements :

• Compressor and gun air filters are used to purify the air. There are many of them, which differ in their ability to filter different volumes of air and there are different levels of accuracy in air filtration.

• An air cleaner is generally composed of two compartments, each of which is responsible for separating fine particles, micro particles, water and grease particles. They are usually dismantled and cannot be changed as they can be easily purged.

• the cleaner with a size of 1 µm for filtering water/grease/dust

• the 0.01 µm filter for filtering out micro-particles

• then the regulator (with pressure gauge)

Our air cleaners, depending on the model, can be equipped with inlet or outlet valves to change the cartridges without stopping the compressor, for example.

Paint application with air filters

In order to maintain a good air flow, and to avoid pressure loss in the air circuit, the filter must be well maintained :

- Every day, we must purge the humidity accumulated in the cartridges.

- Depending on the use, it is important to change the cartridges that become clogged as time goes by.

Important : choosing the right air filter to apply the paint. Especially before buying a filter, check its airflow capacity, as many airflows are not suitable for car bodywork, but simply for motorcycle bodywork, as their flow rate is too low.

According to the rules of the bodywork, to achieve the high quality level required by a professional painter, it is necessary, to paint large surfaces such as a vehicle, at the very least :

35 m3 /H (35 000 L / H) , or 583 L / min (35 000 L / H / 60 minutes)

In the field of car painting, the choice of an air filter must be made according to the application : for example, for those who paint complete cars, it is necessary to have a filter with a large capacity in terms of flow (the flow is measured in cubic metres per hour CM3/H). On the contrary, for those who are used to painting smaller parts or doing touch-ups, painting motorcycles or even bicycles for example, medium size air filters are more than sufficient.

These come from the compressor, which naturally accumulates a lot of moisture and also residues of grease, dirt or rust : all these particles end up in the air system and create defects in paints and varnishes.

Filters for spray guns and airbrushes

They are used for very small jobs, such as freehand airbrush drawing, or small retouching. You plug them under the airbrush, or under the gun, because they are small and light. Discover our models for airbrushes or spray guns.

Of course, they cannot guarantee a complete and important air filtration.

Location of air filters

It can be placed at the outlet of the air compressor or at the inlet of the cabin or at the inlet of the gun. In any case, it is common to use several air filters on a supplied pneumatic system. An air filter must not reduce the air flow too much as this can change the characteristics of the paint, the color and the final result. Air compressors are usually supplied with an air filter included : this type of filter is clearly insufficient to deliver quality air.

Large units provide micron and submicron filtration. They capture all impurities, grease from the compressor, and moisture, without impairing the flow rate. They include several compartments, each dedicated to a type of filtration.
